Providing Support for Families

The government is committed to providing compassionate relief amid the rising cost of living. To date, we have implemented a 24% increase to the minimum wage, expanded NGO funding by 10% across the board, introduced new Real Property Tax exemptions for religious and civic organisations, as well as trade unions, putting money back in the pockets of community builders. We’ve increased the salaries of teachers and nurses, expanded concessions for first-time homebuyers, and allocated an extra $500K for Urban Renewal which will support educational and community programming, including its world-renowned marching band.

A Comprehensive Plan on Crime

To clamp down on crime, we are making significant investments in our core national security agencies: the Department of Corrections, Royal Bahamas Police Force, and Royal Bahamas Defence Force. We are expanding recruitment across the agencies while investing in the construction of a new prison complex using a Public-Private Partnership vehicle. We are also allocating $6 million for the purchase of new vessels for the Defence Force as part of the ongoing Sandy Bottom Project, the single largest capital investment the government of The Bahamas has made since the Force’s inception in 1980. To address recidivism, we are advancing our Second Chance Programme, to give rehabilitated citizens a new lease on life.

Rescuing the Economy

In our efforts to rescue the Bahamian economy, we have reconstituted the Revenue Enhancement UNit, which has already made significant strides in increasing government revenue. We have also considerably lowered national debt from 101% of GDP to 87.5%, and we continue to enjoy the far-reaching commercial returns of reducing VAT to 10%.

Expanding Access to Healthcare

We are overhauling health infrastructure to secure a healthier tomorrow for all Bahamians. We are expanding and upgrading facilities at the Prince Margaret Hospital, commissioning new EMT personnel, expanding clinics in the Family Islands and allocating $10 million for catastrophic health care. This means that, for the first time, the government can provide meaningful assistance to long-term dialysis patients, heart patients, and others facing serious medical issues.

Historical Investments in Agriculture

With a view to building a more self-sufficient Bahamas, the government is making unprecedented investments in agriculture. We have earmarked millions of dollars for farming grants and infrastructural upgrades while ramping up local egg and poultry production through the Golden Yolk Programme and electricity concessions. As part of our multi-million dollar investment in food security, we are supporting the acquisition of new broilers, feed mills and greenhouses, while building capacity through training programmes and enhancing the uptake of smart technologies.

We have assiduously pursued a progressive climate agenda which includes drafting carbon credits legislation, implementing renewable energy systems in Inagua and Ragged Island, expanding the number of electric vehicles in the government’s fleet, and successfully lobbying for a Loss and Damage Fund for climate-vulnerable countries like our own.

Comprehensive Education Reform

Following years of distance learning, we restored face-to-face learning and launched the ‘Find Every Child’ Initiative to address pandemic-induced learning loss. We are in the process of renovating schools throughout our archipelago and have introduced a ‘Let’s Swim’ initiative in public schools on New Providence.

Empowering Bahamians

The government has committed $50 million per annum to small business development while opening up new opportunities for Bahamians in the maritime sector through the Bahamas Maritime Authority and LJM Marine Academy.

Family Island Development

Family Island Development

We are committed to shoring up our entire family of islands. To this end, we have broken ground on a new cruise port in Freeport with a new hospital also in the pipeline. We have allocated 10% of total revenue generated in the Family Islands to the creation of a Family Island Development Trust Fund in the amount of $200 million, and we have approved seismic investments such as a cruise port for Long Island and eco-friendly resorts in Exuma. We have broken ground on a new airport for Cat Island, and we have further airport upgrades slated for Eleuthera and Long Island, amongst others.

A Tough Plan on Immigration

To safeguard the borders and resources of The Bahamas, we have recruited new immigration officers, increased patrols and launched Operation Secure, a collaborative security operation between the Royal Bahamas Police Force, Defence Force, and Department of Immigration. This initiative will specifically address security and migration-related issues in unregulated and unlawful communities.
