Prime Minister Davis Highlights the Importance of Sustainability and Climate Action at the 2nd Bahamas Flats Fishing Guide Homecoming Conclave

“The fight against Climate Change is a fight for the future of flats fishing”

Nassau, The Bahamas – Prime Minister Philip Davis delivered the keynote address today at the 2nd Bahamas Flats Fishing Guide Homecoming Conclave, highlighting the vital cultural and economic significance of flats fishing in The Bahamas, and reaffirming the government’s commitment to its growth and sustainability.

In his speech, the Prime Minister emphasized the cultural and economic importance of flats fishing, noting that the industry generates over $150 million annually. “Flats fishing is not just a sport; it is part of our heritage, supporting livelihoods, and communities across our islands,” the Prime Minister said. He acknowledged that the industry remains a critical pillar in the Bahamian economy, particularly in the Family Islands, where it contributes to local businesses, hotels, and eco-tourism.

The Prime Minister addressed climate change and its impact on the flats fishing industry, warning that rising ocean temperatures and increasing frequency of extreme weather events are already affecting fish populations and ecosystems. “The fight against climate change is a fight for the future of flats fishing in The Bahamas,” he remarked. The government is focused on advancing climate-resilient projects and policies to protect the marine environment and the nation’s natural resources.

In line with the conclave’s theme, “Guides as Stewards, Guides as Ambassadors,” the Prime Minister called on fishing guides to promote sustainability and stewardship. “You are the guardians of our waters and ecosystems, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that we protect these resources for future generations,” he stated. He encouraged cross-sector collaboration, bringing together the efforts of guides, hoteliers, fishers, and tourists to support sustainability initiatives.

Prime Minister Davis also outlined the administration’s government support and investment in the flats fishing industry, which includes strategic marketing initiatives, increased local government budgets, and infrastructure development. Recent projects include airport renovations and climate-resilient energy upgrades aimed at improving access and enhancing the visitor experience. “We will continue to invest in the infrastructure that underpins this vital industry and ensure that it thrives for years to come,” he added.

Recognizing the importance of skills development, the Prime Minister announced that education and capacity building initiatives will be expanded through the Bahamas Agriculture and Marine Science Institute (BAMSI). The institute will continue to offer training and certification programs for saltwater flats guides, with scholarships available to students from across the islands to promote equal opportunities.

Finally, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to empowering the Family Islands, ensuring inclusive development that improves roads, water infrastructure, and healthcare, while attracting foreign direct investment to stimulate local economies. “Our vision is for every island and community to thrive, and no one should be left behind as we move towards a future of sustainable and inclusive growth.”
