Building Resilience: National Youth Guard Cohort Five Marks Progress in Disaster Readiness Training

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The fifth cohort of the National Youth Guard (NYG) has reached a major milestone, completing six weeks of intensive training in disaster readiness, technical trades, and leadership development. With just weeks remaining before their November 21st graduation, the 70 cadets – representing five islands across the archipelago – are steadily advancing toward certification as the nation’s newest responders.

The group is undergoing Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) exercises, an internationally recognized programme equipping them with life-saving skills for fire and water emergencies, led by retired Marine Officer Ryan Bridgewater of Ship Mate Limited. Once certified, the cadets will continue with technical and vocational training at the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) before beginning three-week internships with public and private sector partners.

Since its launch in 2023, the National Youth Guard has trained more than 250 young Bahamians, from across The Bahamas, 10 islands in total are represented. The graduates are trained not only to serve during national emergencies but also to enter the workforce with confidence.

To date, 73 percent of graduates have secured employment within three months, highlighting the dual impact of the programme in strengthening national resilience while expanding career opportunities.

During a recent visit to observe a man-overboard drill during the final examination for the STCW certification, at HMBS Coral Harbour, Prime Minister The Hon. Philip Davis, KC, MP, congratulated Cohort Five on their progress and offered words of encouragement:

“Each of you has already proven your courage and commitment by coming this far. Six weeks into your journey, you stand stronger, more disciplined, and better prepared to serve your country in times of need. In you, I see the next generation of leaders who will carry The Bahamas forward.”

He added:

“Because of your training, families will be safer, communities will be stronger, and opportunities will continue to grow for young Bahamians everywhere. You remind us all that service is the highest calling, and you give us reason to believe our best days are still ahead.”

The Prime Minister also extended gratitude to the instructors, families, and programme coordinators who continue to support the trainees on their path to service.
