Prime Minister Philip Davis’s Remarks at the Commissioning of the Mayaguana Airport

Good morning, Mayaguana.

Thank you all for joining us for this monumental moment of progress for this island.

As I look around, I can’t help but feel proud of what we have accomplished here.

It always feels great to be the bearer of good news.

And today, we are here to celebrate some very good news.

There are moments when the possible becomes real and when the long-promised becomes tangible.

Today is one of those moments.

This airport, this new terminal standing before us, is a declaration of the importance of Mayaguana to our plans for development.

It is a declaration that every Bahamian, regardless of which island they call home, deserves world-class infrastructure and a government that keeps its word and delivers.

When this administration came into office in September 2021, we made a commitment to launch the most ambitious Family Islands Airport Renaissance in the history of this country.

Today, we deliver on that promise, here, in Abraham’s Bay.

This new terminal has been fitted with a comfortable ticketing area, restrooms, dedicated airline offices, vendor spaces, and full operational capacity for airport security and police.

Construction was completed in December. And it received full power in January with its own dedicated transformer.

We are now commissioning this airport for the people of Mayaguana and the many travellers who will find their way here more easily than ever before.

However, Mayaguana’s new airport is not an isolated achievement. It is just one chapter in the largest investment in Family Island airport infrastructure ever undertaken by any government in Bahamian history.

Since 2021, we have completed major works at Ragged Island, Great Harbour Cay, Grand Bahama’s domestic terminal, LPIA, Long Island’s Stella Maris, and now, Mayaguana.

Active construction is underway at more than ten sites, in Abaco, Bimini, Cat Island, Eleuthera, Exuma, Grand Bahama International, and beyond.

We are also in the planning phase for additional airports in Abaco, Andros, Crooked Island, Exuma, and Rum Cay.

This is a true Family Islands Renaissance.

And Mayaguana is primed to receive even more investments. We have already committed to building a three-phased deep-water seaport on this island, facilitated through a public-private partnership with Mayaguana Island Developers and Global Lead Consultant Group Limited that will include a cruise ship terminal, a deep-water transshipment port, and adjacent land development.

This project, which will be jointly owned by the Government of The Bahamas, the Mayaguana Island Development Fund, and our private partners, is projected to create two thousand jobs over its lifetime.

Two thousand new jobs right here in Mayaguana.

The economy of Mayaguana will be forever changed by this progress.

And this is just the beginning of our plans.

Our Blueprint for Change was always about transforming the quality of life for all Bahamians.

The Southern Bahamas is fully included in our plans and will not be neglected or forgotten, not under this administration.

Mayaguana has waited a long time for this.

Your patience has paid off and your future is bright.

Welcome to your new airport.

And welcome to the next chapter of growth and development for this island.

May God bless you and may God continue to bless The Commonwealth of The Bahamas.
