Prime Minister Davis’ Response to the Rt. Honourable Justin Trudeau

On behalf of the Heads of Government of CARICOM, we appreciate your empathy and your commitment to regional cooperation in addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Republic of Haiti. The stabilisation of Haiti’s institutions, infrastructure, and communities is integral to the security of the Caribbean region and to its future development.

We are committed to working with the Haitian government to support and assist in achieving security and political stability for the country. We agree with your comments that there is a need for a holistic and collaborative approach towards addressing Haiti’s political and economic challenges.

CARICOM has been working with the international community to ensure that the people of Haiti can realise their aspirations for peace and prosperity. The best way forward is through inclusive and transparent dialogue, which will allow for a peaceful and lasting resolution to the current situation in Haiti. CARICOM looks forward to working with the Canadian government and other international partners to assist and support the Haitian people.

We firmly believe a Haitian-led solution is vital to ensuring a sustainable and long-lasting resolution to the country’s challenges. The Haitian government and people must be at the forefront of any efforts to address the country’s current situation.

Any solutions must be tailored to meet the needs of the Haitian people and be grounded in the realities of the country’s political and economic context.

Therefore, CARICOM respects the sovereignty of Haiti and its people and supports their efforts to find a peaceful and sustainable solution to their challenges. Only through a Haitian-led approach, supported by international partners, can we achieve lasting stability, security and development in Haiti and, by extension, the wider Caribbean region. We stand ready to support the Haitian people and government in their efforts towards a brighter future for Haiti.

It is essential to acknowledge that CARICOM, as a regional body, requires more resources and capacity to address Haiti’s complexity of challenges. We call on the international community to provide the necessary support; this includes providing political, economic and technical resources as part of a long-term commitment. It is through this international cooperation and coordination, we can effectively support the Haitian people and government.

CARICOM would like to express our sincere appreciation to you, Prime Minister, for your leadership and commitment to addressing the challenges facing Haiti and the wider Caribbean region. We look forward to continued collaboration and cooperation with the Canadian government and other international partners towards finding a lasting solution to the current situation in Haiti.
