Prime Minister Davis Tours Newly Reopened Straw Market

Following the official reopening of the Nassau Straw Market on Monday, Prime Minister Hon. Philip Davis participated in a tour of the facility yesterday.

The opening serves as part of the Davis administration’s commitment to restore the Bahamian economy.

“I was happy to see the glow of excitement on these vendors who are so appreciative of the fact that they can now restart their lives”, said Prime Minister Davis, as he was warmly welcomed by straw market vendors.

Several vendors shared their gratitude to the Prime Minister for prioritizing the reopening following a near 20-month stretch of unemployment, due to the COVID-19 restrictions imposed by the former government.

With tourism still playing a vital role in the Bahamian economy, the reopening of the straw market contributes to the government’s mission to equitably serve all key stakeholders of the industry and encourage its recovery.

A number of safety measures have been implemented by the Ministry of Health to ensure that the government’s vision of a safe and robust opening is met.

Accompanying the Prime Minister on his tour, were Minister of Health and Wellness, Hon. Michael Darville, and Minister of Social Services and Urban Development, Hon. Obediah Wilchcombe.
